• Choose a newspaper, preferably a weekend or provincial daily newspaper rather than a smaller local newspaper

• Select two stories featuring two leaders in sport and/or recreation who show leadership in different situations, for example a sports captain, a coach, a fitness instructor or a Minister of Sport

• Answer the following questions:

1. Who is the leader in the article? (What is their leadership role?)

2. What does the article tell us about leadership? (The benefits, the challenges, the difference it makes for others)

3. Do you think the leader you have chosen is a good leader? Why/Why not? (What is an effective or good leader?)

4. What is the situation in which the leader leads? Describe the environment.

This morning we made some posters about the flu to inform people about ways to stop it from spreading around our school.

These are a few of the things you should do

• Don't share drinks or drink bottles
• Tell someone if you feel sick
• Wash or sanitize your hands thoroughly
• Disinfect all surfaces that have been touched
• Eat lots of healthy foods like fruit and yoghurt
• Rest or sleep and keep warm
• Cover your mouth when sneezing or coughing and laughing
• Get some fresh air
• Drink lots of fluids

We have given a poster to each class in Burnham school to remind them what to do, to stop them getting the flu.

TOPIC – We Will Rock You

Research and information gather the answers to your questions about your selected natural disaster. ANZAC DAY

Choose 3 or more of the following activities to be completed and brought to school to share over the next 2 weeks.

Thank you Cards

· Make your own thank you cards thanking Returned Servicemen for their efforts in the Wars.

· Send them to your local RSL or RSA.

· Visit the local RSL or RSA to give your cards personally and talk to some of the Returned Servicemen and Women.

Research

· Research how many wars that Australia and New Zealand have been involved in.

· Watch any documentaries of ANZAC Day. Pretend you are a Soldier At War.

· Write a letter to a family member telling them of your experiences at war.

Bulletin Board

· Focus on newspapers, magazines, library books, TV and the Internet and collect any historic “Anzac Day” news and information found.

Interview

· Interview a Returned Serviceman or someone who experienced the war.

· Ask them about their experiences and memories.

· View recorded film interviews of returned ANZAC Servicemen and Women.

Visit a Dawn Parade in your area.

Time Capsule

· Create a time capsule for the future.

· Set an appropriate date for the opening, e.g. the 75th anniversary of the ending of World War 2, which will be in the year 2020.

• You must complete the writing part of the activity using your own words, no copying from the reading
• As you read note down important dates, places, names and main points (use Bullet Points under disasters heading in Reading Book)
• Conference your work with a partner before showing the teacher - make sure your work is factual, detailed, written in own words, suitable for mature audience, has been proof-read and edited
• When publishing use eye catching techniques

This will be a fun unit that will help us learn more about NZ history and share this with others in an interesting way.

Anzac Holiday Project

Operation Anzac Forces

As part of this year’s Anzac Day commemoration the New Zealand Defence Force would like to invite Year 7 and 8 students to enter OPERATION ANZAC FORCES.

How to enter
Design a poster showing NZ Defence Force personnel working overseas today. This can be in the medium of your choice (drawing, painting, collage etc) but please no items larger than A3 size. The competition closes on Friday 23 April.

There are three main prizes up for grabs:
a. A day at Devonport Naval Base, plus a NZ Kiwi cap as worn by NZDF personnel overseas
b. A day with the Army, plus a NZ Kiwi cap
c. A visit to RNZAF Base Auckland or Ohakea, plus a NZ Kiwi cap
The winner will have first choice, then the second place getter.
Four runners up will be awarded a prize pack of Defence Force products.

Winners will be announced on Monday 10 May.

I hope everyone has started their packing at home and getting very excited. Please remember if an item is not on the gear list (phones, MP3...) they are not to be packed, there's going to be so much to do at Arthur's Pass that you won't even miss them.

Remember to bring along your costume for the party, yummy baking for us to share for breaks, and if you're running a game, you have your instructions and equipment sorted.
